My List Of 10+ Essential WordPress Plugins That Every Website Needs

essential wordpress plugins

Nowadays WordPress is the most popular cms for creating website. In this article, I will share my list of 10+ essential WordPress plugins that every WordPress based website needs. These plugins all do important things for the website, including:

  • Protect your site from hackers
  • Block spammers
  • Create beautiful sliders
  • Automatically backup your WordPress site for free
  • Speed up your WordPress site with caching
  • Sell digital products on  your WordPress site
  • Improve SEO on your WordPress site
  • Get email subscribers on WordPress

1.  Wordpress Security – Antivirus, Firewall, And Malware

If you haven’t had your site hacked or had a site that crashed due to malware, then consider yourself lucky. And if you don’t have a security plugin installed, do so now. Wordfence Security has been downloaded 22 million times and is 100% free.

What does Wordfence Security do?

  1. Prevents you from getting hacked with a Firewall that blocks attackers
  2. Secures your login with tools like two-factor authentication and locking out brute force attacks
  3. Scans your site files for any damaged or malicious files
  4. Monitors traffic and users who log in and view your website

And much more! Another option for security is the Sucuri Security plugin. But I’ve always used Wordfence, and am completely happy with it.

2. Yoast SEO – Improve Website SEO

Search engines need to know that your site exists so that it appears in search results. the Yoast SEO plugin not only creates an XML Sitemap that does this, but it analyzes your pages and posts providing suggestions for making your website more SEO friendly. It’s yet another one of my favorite WordPress plugins.

3. WP Super Cache – Speed Up Website Load Times

The WP Super Cache plugin speeds up your website by turning your dynamic WordPress site into static html files that are more quickly processed by users. For 99% of your visitors, they’ll receive the html files with no difference than the dynamic ones.

I still need to work on my website speed, and I’ve also used Autoptimize to minimize JS, CSS and HTML that was still slowing down the site.

Another plugin you can use to safely clean up your database is WP-Optimize. This plugin can do things like remove spam or trashed comments, clean up post revisions, clean up post meta data, and other things that slow down your website.

4. Akismet Anti-Spam Plugin

I read a stat recently that said over 75% of comments on blogs are spam. You don’t want to be sifting through that as your website grows. Akismet makes sure that comments and contact form submissions are safe from malicious content, automatically. This is a must have a plugin for anyone starting a WordPress website.

5. Fast Secure Contact Form

The Akismet plugin is another one of my favorite WordPress plugins. It’s great for blocking spam comments and contact form submissions, but to create a custom contact form, I like the simplicity of the Fast Secure Contact Form plugin. You can design a form with custom fields and include Google reCAPTCHA to further block spammers.

6. BackUpWordPress

In the unfortunate event that your website does crash due to attack or to your human error, having a backup is crucial to getting back up to speed. There are many paid options out there, but BackUpWordPress is a great free plugin that can backup your entire database and website files on your schedule.

It’s very easy to use! I just set it to run weekly, and I get a nice email with a link to the backup file every week.

7. Gumroad – eCommerce Plugin

If you want to sell digital or physical products, Gumroad.com is a great place to get started. You can get started for free, and easily start selling your products or services for one-time or recurring fees.

Gumroad also created a WordPress plugin so you can cleanly add a Gumroad product overlay or button into your website.

8. Pretty Link Lite – Easy Redirects

Shrink any long links into short links that you can track with this free plugin. If you’re growing an audience with content like YouTube videos, podcasts or social media, it’s a good idea to shorten your blog and page URLs to something more easily remembered.

With Pretty Link Lite, one of my favorite WordPress plugins, you can do that. You can also track the clicks for each of these links. And you can edit the link redirect at a later date if you want. For example, this would be very helpful if you posted your pretty short link on a bunch of YouTube videos, but at a later date want those links to direct to a different page.

9. ConvertKit – Email Subscriber & Marketing Plugin

There are hundreds of options for email marketing. I use ConvertKit because it was built by bloggers for bloggers who want to build an audience and sell digital products. It has all the tools I could want currently, and it’s super easy to use. I use it to build automated email sequences and to segment my list into different types of subscribers.

ConvertKit plugin is a handy tool if you want to embed the sign-up forms onto your WordPress website.

If you’re looking for a free newsletter plugin, MailPoet is what I started out with. You can grow a list up to 2,000 subscribers for free (it costs after that). It’s built right on WordPress, making it super convenient to use.

10. Google Analytics Dashboard

Google Analytics is a powerful tool to help you understand and grow your website traffic and audience. The Google Analytics Dashboard plugin displays your stats right on your WordPress Dashboard.

11. SumoMe Growth Tools

SumoMe is an amazing tool that helps you grow your email list and social presence. This free tools plugin has free features like different types of opt-in forms: welcome mats, subscriber smart bars, and scrolling opt-in forms. It also has social sharing buttons that can be added to your posts and pages to increase sharing of your articles.

If you just want a plugin that does social media sharing icons, the Floating Social Media Icon plugin is a great free option.

These are my list of essential WordPress plugins. Were there any you didn’t know about? Were there any I missed, that you love? Please let me know in the comments below. Cheers!
